Chromosome Segregation: Spindle Mechanics Come To Life
نویسنده
چکیده
Chromosome segregation is a mechanical process, and the spindle generates, and is subject to, mechanical force. A recent study probes how the mechanical architecture of the spindle allows it to maintain mechanical integrity despite these forces.

Chromosome Segregation and Aneuploidy series The spindle checkpoint: tension versus attachment
The spindle checkpoint ensures the fidelity of chromosome segregation by preventing cell-cycle progression until all the chromosomes make proper bipolar attachments to the mitotic spindle and come under tension. Despite significant advances in our understanding of spindle checkpoint function, the primary signal that activates the spindle checkpoint remains unclear. Whereas some experiments indi...
متن کاملChromosome segregation in plant meiosis
Faithful chromosome segregation in meiosis is essential for ploidy stability over sexual life cycles. In plants, defective chromosome segregation caused by gene mutations or other factors leads to the formation of unbalanced or unreduced gametes creating aneuploid or polyploid progeny, respectively. Accurate segregation requires the coordinated execution of conserved processes occurring through...

Submitted for the MAR10 Meeting of The American Physical Society Spindle Checkpoint Regulated by Non-Equilibrium Collective Spindle-Chromosome Interaction; Relationship to Single DNA Molecule Force-Extension Formula LEIF MATSSON — The spindle checkpoint, which blocks segregation until all sister chromatid pairs have been stably connected to the two spindle poles, is perhaps the biggest mystery ...
متن کاملKinetochore assembly: if you build it, they will come.
Accurate chromosome segregation requires the interaction of chromosomes with the microtubules from the mitotic spindle. This interaction is mediated by the macro-molecular kinetochore complex, which assembles only at the centromeric region of each chromosome. However, how this site is specified and how assembly of the kinetochore structure is regulated in coordination with cell cycle progressio...
متن کاملcsi2p modulates microtubule dynamics and organizes the bipolar spindle for chromosome segregation
Proper chromosome segregation is of paramount importance for proper genetic inheritance. Defects in chromosome segregation can lead to aneuploidy, which is a hallmark of cancer cells. Eukaryotic chromosome segregation is accomplished by the bipolar spindle. Additional mechanisms, such as the spindle assembly checkpoint and centromere positioning, further help to ensure complete segregation fide...
